How can I do CAN communication with NI CompactRIO Single‐Board Controller (sbRIO)? What driver do I need?

Solution

Depending on the model of the NI sbRIO you are using, there are three type of drivers that you would need:

NI-Embedded CAN for RIO: Some sbRIO comes with onboard CAN port and is supported by NI-Embedded CAN for RIO. NI-Embedded CAN for RIO does not support CAN FD. For more information about this driver, see the links below:
NI CompactRIO : NI sbRIO with NI-DAQmx has dedicated CAN port which supports CAN and CAN FD. It uses low-level FPGA IO nodes based on NI-985x API. This support is added in NI CompactRIO 20.5 for LabVIEW 2020. See CompactRIO Single-Board Controller with NI-DAQmx Hardware Manual page 1 for list of supported hardware and page 49 on connecting CAN networks.
NI-XNET: If you wish to use the NI-XNET Driver with the sbRIO platform, some sbRIO supports the driver with NI-986x C Series Modules when connected through a Mezzanine Card.
