Issue Details

I have a PXIe-5842 installed in a PXIe-1095 chassis. In NI Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX), the module reports:

  • Module Cooling State: Nonfunctional
  • Requested Module Cooling: 82 W
  • Negotiated Module Cooling: 38 W

The module may also report reduced functionality or fail to operate as expected.

The following image shows the reported cooling values in NI MAX:

Solution

First, verify that the chassis in which the module is installed provides sufficient slot cooling capacity for the PXIe-5842.

According to the PXIe-5842 User Manual, the module requires a minimum slot cooling capacity of 82 W. Verify the chassis specifications and confirm that it supports this cooling requirement.

If the chassis meets the cooling requirements and the PXIe-5842 continues to report the nonfunctional state, try changing the chassis fan mode by using the chassis DIP switch settings. For the PXIe-1095:

  1. Power down the PXI system.
  2. Locate the DIP switch bank on the chassis.
  3. Identify the Fan Mode switch.
  4. Verify the setting:
    1. If the switch is set to High, change it to Auto.
    2. If the issue persists, test both Auto and High fan modes and verify whether the negotiated cooling value changes.
  5. Power the chassis back on and allow the system to boot.
  6. Open NI MAX and verify the PXIe-5842 status.

In some cases, changing the fan mode may resolve incorrect cooling negotiation behavior reported by the chassis.
