Integrating NI Hardware and Software with Vector Tools (CANoe, CANape)

Updated Sep 16, 2026

Environment

Software

  • LabVIEW
  • DIAdem

Driver

  • NI-XNET
  • NI-CAN
  • NI-DAQ™mx

Programming Language

  • C++

You may need to exchange data between National Instruments™ (NI) hardware or software and Vector Informatik tools such as CANoe, CANape, CANalyzer, or DIAdem. NI does not provide or maintain generic standalone DLL packages or step-by-step procedures for integrating NI hardware directly into Vector software environments.
The supported integration approach depends on the specific workflow and the software architecture being used. In most cases, the required drivers, DLLs, interfaces, and documentation are developed, maintained, and distributed by Vector Informatik GmbH.

Prerequisites:
  • Installed NI software and drivers appropriate for the hardware being used
  • Installed Vector software and any required Vector integration packages
  • Access to Vector documentation and support resources
  • Knowledge of the target integration architecture

  1. Identify the specific integration workflow you want to implement.
  2. For using Vector hardware within NI DIAdem™, use Vector's vMeasure Option DIAdem software and the associated CANDriver.dll components provided by Vector.
  3. For using Vector hardware within NI LabVIEW™, use Vector's XL Driver API through vxlapi.dll and follow the implementation guidance provided by Vector.
  4. For calling LabVIEW applications from Vector CANape:
    • Build the LabVIEW application into an executable and invoke it using CANape's call() function.
    • Alternatively, build a LabVIEW DLL and create a C/C++ wrapper DLL that interfaces with CANape.
  1. For integrating NI hardware into Vector CANoe or CANape, select one of the supported communication approaches:
    • Use Vector's pl_nidaqmx.dll driver integration when supported by the Vector environment.
    • Use Fast Data Exchange (FDX) over UDP for real-time communication between CANoe and LabVIEW.
    • Use Network-Published Shared Variables (NI-PSP).
    • Use a COM Server interface.
  1. Obtain any required third-party DLLs, drivers, configuration files, or installation packages directly from Vector.
  2. Consult Vector support documentation for installation guidance, configuration procedures, compatibility information, and troubleshooting of Vector-specific drivers and integrations.

You can determine the appropriate integration method for your application and identify whether the required software components, drivers, or DLLs must be obtained from Vector rather than NI.

A user wants to acquire data from NI-DAQmx hardware and make that data available within Vector CANoe.
  1. Install the required NI-DAQmx driver.
  2. Select a supported Vector integration method such as:
    • pl_nidaqmx.dll
    • FDX over UDP
    • COM Server communication
    • NI-PSP
  3. Configure the integration using Vector documentation and tools.
  4. Verify data exchange between the NI application and CANoe.

Next Steps

  • Review Vector documentation for the selected integration method.
  • Contact Vector support for issues related to Vector-provided drivers, DLLs, or interfaces.
  • Review NI documentation for NI-DAQmx, NI-XNET, LabVIEW, and DIAdem configuration requirements.
  • Reference the article Calling LabVIEW Programs in Vector CANape when implementing CANape-to-LabVIEW communication.
