Issue Details

I’m reviewing the documentation for the PXIe-4304 and the TB-4304, and I’m confused about the pin assignments. The connector row numbers on the I/O connector in the PXIe-4304 User Manual (Table 2-1) do not match the connector row numbering in the TB-4304 Circuit Board Parts Locator Diagram (Figure 4) of the NI PXIe-4304/4305 and TB-4304 User Guide and Terminal Block Specifications.

Do the signals applied to the labeled screw terminals of the TB-4304 get routed to the correct connector pins of the PXIe-4304?

Solution

The observed discrepancy is expected behavior and results from the opposing pin-numbering conventions used on the mating connectors of the NI PXIe-4304 module and the NI TB-4304 terminal block.

The PXIe-4304 front connector numbering begins with Row 32 at the top of the module connector. The TB-4304 printed circuit board (PCB) silkscreen numbering begins with Row 1 at the top of the terminal block connector. Because the connectors mate face-to-face, the connector rows are mirrored when connected. For example:

  • Pin 1 on one connector mates with Pin 32 on the opposing connector.
  • Pin 2 on one connector mates with Pin 31 on the opposing connector.
  • Pin 3 on one connector mates with Pin 30 on the opposing connector.

To verify and connect signals correctly:

  1. Do not use the connector row-number silkscreen on the TB-4304 connector to determine signal locations.
  2. Reference Table 2-1, Front Connector Signal Pin Assignments in the NI PXIe-4304/4305 User Manual to identify the signal assignments on the PXIe-4304 connector.
  3. Follow the signal labels printed adjacent to the TB-4304 screw terminals, such as AI0+, AI0-, and AIGND, when making wiring connections.

Additional Information

The connector row numbers printed on the TB-4304 PCB identify physical connector positions and are not intended to be used as signal identifiers when mapping signals between the TB-4304 and the PXIe-4304.

Signal wiring should always be based on:

  • The signal assignments documented in the NI PXIe-4304/4305 User Manual
  • The signal labels printed next to the TB-4304 screw terminals
