Issue Details

I need to travel with a PXI(e) module and want to know whether passing it through an airport security X-ray scanner can damage the hardware or erase any data. I am also concerned about how to safely transport the module during air travel.

Solution

A PXI(e) module can pass through a standard airport security X-ray scanner used for carry-on luggage without being damaged or having its contents wiped. The airport scanner itself is generally not the primary concern during transportation.

The primary risks during travel are:
  • Electrostatic discharge (ESD)
  • Physical impact or connector damage

To help protect the PXI(e) module during transport:
  1. Place the module in an ESD-shielding or antistatic bag.
  2. Use the original NI packaging whenever available.
  3. Place the protected module in a padded rigid case or a well-cushioned carry-on bag if the original packaging is not available.
  4. Handle the module by the card edges or front bracket only.
  5. Avoid touching the backplane connector or exposed circuitry.

This handling approach is similar to transporting a laptop through airport security. PXI systems and modules are commonly transported through airport security screening when properly protected from ESD and mechanical damage.

Additional Information

You can view the safety guidelines of your specific module from the User Manual. Use the NI Product Documentation Center to find the User Manual for your specific module.
