Issue Details

I am running NI Volume License Manager (VLM) on a Windows server, and my security scanning tool reports vulnerabilities in the installed Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime 8.0 version. I want to know whether upgrading the .NET 8 Runtime to a newer servicing patch is supported.

Solution

Upgrading the Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime 8.0 to a newer servicing patch within the .NET 8.0.x release family is supported for NI Volume License Manager. Installing the latest Microsoft servicing update within the .NET 8 release line is the recommended remediation approach.

Follow the steps below to upgrade the .NET Desktop Runtime:
  1. Back up the NI Volume License Manager configuration. Open NI Volume License Manager, then select File>>Backup/Restore NI VLM and create a backup.
  2. Download the updated .NET runtime installer from Microsoft official .NET website. Remain within the .NET 8.0.x release family.
    • If both x86 and x64 runtimes are installed in the computer, upgrade both versions.
  3. Install the .NET runtime update.
  4. Reboot the computer and restart the NI Volume License Manager service after the update is done.
  5. Verify the operation of NI Volume License Manager. Confirm the server status displays Running and perform a test license checkout from a client machine.
