Restore CompactRIO Communication When Target Is Missing in MAX

Issue Details

I can successfully ping my NI CompactRIO™ or other network target, but the device appears disconnected or does not show up correctly in NI Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX). In some cases, the target intermittently disconnects, becomes unresponsive, exhibits high CPU interrupt load, or target software services appear frozen. The device remains reachable over the network, but I cannot establish normal communication through MAX.

Solution

If the target responds to network ping requests but appears disconnected in NI Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX), corruption within target software services or the deployed software image may prevent proper communication.
Perform the following steps:
  1. Verify that the target responds to network ping requests.
  2. Confirm that the target appears disconnected, missing, or unavailable in NI MAX.
  3. Observe whether symptoms such as the following are present:
    • High CPU interrupt load
    • Target software freezes
    • Unresponsive target services
    • Intermittent communication failures
  4. Format the target disk using the appropriate recovery or formatting method for the target.
  5. Reinstall a clean software image on the target.
  6. Reboot the target.
  7. Rediscover or reconnect to the target through NI MAX.
In situations where the target remains reachable on the network but communication with NI MAX is not functioning correctly, formatting the disk and deploying a clean software image can remove corrupted target services and restore normal communication.

Additional Information

This update is intended for scenarios where standard network connectivity verification is successful, but device discovery and communication through NI Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) remain unsuccessful.
