Issue Details

I install two modules in a PXIe-1090 MXI chassis. One is a PXIe-408x series DMM (e.g., PXIe-4081), and the other is a PXI module (e.g., PXI-2503 Switch module). When the PXIe-1090 chassis is connected to the host PC via Thunderbolt, the system crashes with a Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) during startup, indicating that the issue is related to ni408x_driver.sys. As a result, the host PC cannot boot into the operating system.

  • I have verified that the chassis and all module drivers are correctly installed on the host PC, and that the driver versions are compatible with the hardware.
  • I also followed the steps in the MXI Troubleshooting Guide, but none of them resolved the issue.
  • If either of the two modules is removed from the PXIe-1090 chassis, the host PC can boot normally, and both the chassis and modules are correctly detected in NI MAX. The issue only occurs when the PXIe-408x module and the PXI module are installed in the chassis at the same time.
  • This issue does not occur on all host PCs—some reproduce the problem, while others do not.

What is the cause of this issue?

Solution

This BSoD issue is caused by the initialization process of the PXIe-408x DMM driver and is currently identified as a known bug.

The issue has been observed across different laptop brands and models. Based on reproduction testing, it appears more frequently on Windows 11, for Windows 10, it tends to have a lower probability of running into the issue. However, this is not a definitive factor.

If you meet this issue, NI currently recommends the following workarounds:

  1. Replace the PXIe-408x DMM with a different model to avoid triggering the bug.
  2. Try using a host PC running Windows 10 (as noted above, this may reduce the likelihood but does not guarantee resolution).

NI is investigating this issue. Updates and solution will be provided in this article once they become available.
