VISA Warning 0x3FFF0077

This article describes how to resolve a VISA warning that prevents NI MAX from detecting an Ethernet instrument. When the issue occurs, NI MAX reports warning 0x3FFF0077 because a VISA Passport, such as NiVisaEnet.dll, cannot be loaded, and attempting to open a session to the instrument returns error 0xBFFF00A5. By following the steps below to repair your NI-VISA installation, you will restore the missing Passport and allow NI MAX to detect and communicate with the instrument again.

The steps are general and apply to other NI-VISA versions where a corrupted Passport prevents an instrument from being detected.

Repairing your NI-VISA installation restores the corrupted or missing Passport files and registry entries that cause the instrument to disappear from NI MAX. Reinstalling NI-VISA typically does not resolve this issue, because it preserves the existing (corrupted) settings and registry entries, so use Repair rather than reinstall.

1. Close NI MAX and any applications that use NI-VISA.
2. Open the Windows Control Panel and go to Programs and Features (or Add/Remove Programs).
3. Locate NI-VISA in the list of installed software and select it. If your NI software is grouped under a single NI Package Manager or NI Software entry, select that instead.
4. Click Change or Repair to launch the NI installer in repair mode.
5. In the installer, select Repair, then follow the prompts to complete the repair. Provide the installation media or allow the repair tool to download the required files if prompted.
6. Restart the computer once the repair finishes.
7. Open NI MAX and click Refresh. Check that the instrument now appears under Devices and Interfaces (or Network Devices) without a yellow warning triangle, to ensure that the Passport loaded correctly and VISA can communicate with the instrument.
