PXIe Device Not Detected or Not Configurable in NI Measurement & Automation Explorer

Updated May 15, 2026

Issue Details

I am unable to detect or configure a PXIe device in NI Measurement & Automation Explorer (NI MAX). When opening NI MAX or navigating to Devices and Interfaces, one or more of the following symptoms occur:
  • NI MAX displays the error message “The MAX database exited abnormally.
  • NI MAX becomes stuck at the Initializing window and does not fully load.
  • NI MAX opens but does not list PXIe hardware under the chassis.
  • The PXIe device appears as an unconfigured or generic device.
  • Only a VISA Test Panel option is available for the detected hardware.
  • Some PXIe modules show powered status LEDs while others do not.
  • Simulated devices cannot be created in NI MAX.
  • NI MAX intermittently freezes or becomes unresponsive.

At the operating system level, NI-related behavior may include:
  • NI Device Loader fails to start or reports a timeout.
  • NI Configuration Manager does not remain running.
  • Installed NI software does not appear under My System >> Software.
  • NI Package Manager reports errors when repairing, upgrading, or removing NI software such as NI‑DAQmx.

These symptoms persist across system restarts and may appear after system-level changes such as operating system updates, firmware updates, or BIOS updates.

Solution

This issue can occur if NI services, drivers, or configuration data are corrupted or blocked by system security controls, preventing NI MAX from properly initializing or detecting PXIe hardware.
Perform the following steps in order, from lowest effort to highest effort.
  1. Restart the computer and relaunch NI Measurement & Automation Explorer.
  2. Verify that the PXIe chassis and modules are powered on and physically seated.
  3. Open Windows Services and verify the following services are Running and set to Automatic:
    • NI Device Loader
    • NI Configuration Manager
  4. Restart NI Device Loader and NI Configuration Manager services.
  5. Open NI MAX and select View >> Refresh.
  6. Reset the NI MAX configuration database by selecting Tools >> Reset Configuration Data.
  7. Restart the computer when prompted.
  8. Open NI Package Manager and select Repair for the affected NI driver.
    1. If you have issues please disable third‑party antivirus, endpoint protection, or privilege‑management software, and try to repair again.
    2. Install the required NI drivers for the PXIe device with security software disabled.
  9. Restart the computer.
  10. Re‑enable security software and configure exclusions for NI installation directories and services.

After completing these steps, NI MAX should load normally and the PXIe device should appear correctly and be configurable.
