Solution
Install the required NI-488.2 components to enable GPIB-USB-HS detection and operation. Installing NI-VISA alone is not sufficient to use NI GPIB hardware such as the GPIB-USB-HS.
If your application uses VISA‑based communication with GPIB-USB-HS, you must install NI-488.2 in addition to NI-VISA. Make sure both NI-VISA and NI-488.2 are installed in compatible versions for your operating system.
In the NI-488.2 2025 Q4 installer, a reduced installation was verified to support operating system detection of the GPIB-USB-HS device and basic communication. For example, when "Deselect all" was selected during installation, the installer kept the core NI-488.2 components needed for basic hardware recognition and operation.
Note: Some NI MAX features, such as Scan for Instruments, require the NI-488.2 MAX Support driver rather than a runtime-only or reduced installation.
In the NI-488.2 2025 Q4 installer, this support appears as NI-488.2 MAX Support. Scan for Instruments became available after NI-488.2 MAX Support was installed.
The installer screen is an example from the NI-488.2 2025 Q4 installer. In other versions, the same or similar support may appear with a different name.
