Issue Details

  • After restarting my system with MXI connections, the MXI modules cannot be detected in NI MAX. This seems to happen randomly.  How should I resolve this issue?
  • After rebooting my system with MXI connections, the MXI connection appears to be missing. This happens intermittently.  How should I establish my MXI connection again so that it appears in NI MAX correctly?

Solution

There is a known bug in the firmware of MXI modules that causes MXI modules to fail to be discovered intermittently after restarting your system.  The solution is to update your MXI module's firmware version to the latest (version 2025 Q3 and above) by using NI MAX launched with administrator privileges.

After the firmware update is completed, shut the PC down and remove the power supply from the MXI modules for at least 10 seconds. This power cycle will help to update the firmware successfully.

Additional Information

There are multiple firmware bin files within the downloaded zip file. This is due to the firmware being specific to different models and hardware revisions of the MXI module. You should Identify the Hardware Revision of your MXI Modules and use the appropriate firmware for your MXI module's revision.

For example:

  • The PXIe-8361 only has one firmware bin file available.  All revisions of the PXIe-8361 are supported by this firmware version.
  • The PXIe-8394 only has one firmware bin file available.  All revisions of the PXIe-8394 are supported by this firmware version.
  • The PXIe-8398 and PXIe-8399 MXI modules both have two firmware bin files available.  The revH firmware is for PXIe-8398 or PXIe-8399 that are RevH or newer.  For example, a RevJ module would use the revH firmware.  The other file, PXIe-8398_fw_2211414.bin, is for modules older than RevH.  For example, a RevB module would use this firmware.
