Issue Details

An RF system composed of PXIe-5842 and RMM-5585 is not initializing correctly in NI MAX.

The front panel of the RMM shows an amber light, and NI MAX displays a “failed to instantiate” error.

All devices appear in NI MAX, but a yellow warning icon is shown next to them, indicating a TCP/IP error.

Solution

This issue could potentially be caused by different hardware or software related factors. Take the following steps in attempt to resolve the issue.

  1. Reset the NI MAX database, just to discar any issue related to corrupted configuration data in NI MAX, a database reset can clear out corrupted or inconsistent data.

    • Refer to the official NI documentation for the reset procedure.
  2. Power cycle the RMM system, a wrong procedure can cause the modules might not initialize correctly

    • Turn off the device and follow the recommended power-up sequence for the RMM.
    • Refer to the official NI documentation for the sequence.
  3. Check the Mini-HDMI cable, a wrong connection between devices can cause this kind of issues.

    • Try using a different Mini-HDMI cable between the PXIe-5842 and RMM-5585.
  4. Isolate PXIe-5842 for testing, in this way we can try to identify if the issue is happening because some issue in the PXIe-5842 or because the communication between devices or some issue in the RMM 5585.

    • Disconnect both PXIe-5842 and RMM-5585.
    • Disconnect any additional module in the chassis.
    • With PXIe-5842 alone:
      • Run a Self-Test in NI MAX.
      • Perform a measurement in InstrumentStudio.
  5. Repair RF drivers, this will repair any corruption in the drivers that could affect the devices

    • Reinstall or repair the following drivers:
      • RFSA
      • RFSG
      • RFmx
