Alarms can monitor the values of tags and send notifications when the value meets certain conditions. This document assumes a basic understanding of how to create custom tags in SystemLink server. It provides instructions for creating custom alarms.

Creating an Alarm Rule

  1. Log into the SystemLink web UI.
  2. From the menu, select Utilities >> Alarms.

  1. Select the Alarm Rules >> Tags menu.

  1. Click Create to create a new Alarm Rule that monitors a tag value.

  1. Configure the Alarm Rule. For demonstration purposes, an alarm is configured to monitor the value of the custom tag local.Custom.Number local.Custom.Number. This Alarm will be triggered if the tag's value exceeds 200. The rule can be configured as follows:
    • Name: Tag Exceeds 200.
    • Description can be anything.
    • Tag Search Path defines which tag to monitor for the alarm condition.
    • Workspace should be the workspace hosting the tag (localhost.Custom.Number is hosted in the Default workspace)
    • Rule Target:  Tag Value.
    • Tag Data Type should be the same as the tag's data type (localhost.Custom.Number is a 32-bit Integer.)
    • Instance Display Name Template: defines what appears when the alarm is set off and, Instance Description Template defines the alarm description that users will see.

  1. In the Conditions field, click Add. This Condition field defines the limit that will trigger the alarm.
  2. In the pop-up window, configure:
    • Severity Level
    • Comparator.
    • Set Point
    • Notification Strategy should be None. (A specific Alarm's Notification Strategy can be attached to the alarm rule for more detail check this article)

  1. Click Add to close the pop-up window.
  2. Click Create to finalize the Alarm Rule.

Verifying Alarm Behavior

  1. Select the Utilities >> Tags menu.

  1. Double-click the tag (In this example localhost.Custom.Number).
  2. Modify the tag's value and click Save to trigger the alarm configured in the previous steps.

  1. Navigate to the Utilities >> Alarms section.
  2. On the Alarms >> Active tab, to view the triggered alarm.

  1. To clear the alarm, manually select it and click Acknowledge

Note: Acknowledging an alarm is not sufficient for it to be re-triggered when a new tag value meets the alarm rule's condition. To ensure the alarm can be re-triggered, it must be cleared.

(Optional)

  1. Double-click the alarm (Numeric Tag Exceeds 200).

  1. From the top menu, select Advanced >> Force Clear.

See this article for instructions on configuring alarms to send email notifications.
