NI Linux Real-Time Target OPC UA API Incompatibility With LabVIEW 2025

  • LabVIEW Real-Time (NI Linux Real-Time)

Issue Details

I have installed the LabVIEW OPC UA Toolkit 2025 Q3 and above on my PC running LabVIEW 2025 (Q1 or Q3) and performed the same installation on my NI Linux Real-Time (RT) controller, allowing me to create and host an OPC UA server on my RT target. To verify the functionality, I tried to run the OPC UA Demo.lvproj on my device. However,  either the VI deployment fails, or even though the deployment process is completed successfully, as soon as the VI starts to run, my RT controller crashes, and it loses communication with the development environment.

Solution

This is a known issue. The behavior occurs because the Linux Real-Time OPC UA 22.8 package is not compatible with LabVIEW 2025. This package is included in Linux RT base images 2025 Q1 and 2025 Q2.

The OPC UA software has an NI-SSL dependency for certificate creation. However, LabVIEW 2025 uses OPENSSL for this purpose. Due to this difference, a symbol collision occurs, which is not resolved in NI Linux RT, resulting in the controller crashing. To solve this issue, you have two options:

  • Install the Linux RT base image 2025 Q3 or above in the RT target.
  • Use LabVIEW 2024 Q3 or earlier.
