Issue Details

I am using DIAdem to view a large data file and I found that whenever I am doing so, my disk space reduces significantly. Using disk management software, I found that DIAdem seems to have created multiple large-size files in my temporary folder. May I know is this expected behavior and can I bypass this need?

Solution

This is an expected behaviour of DIAdem and this is part of the DIAdem's virtual memory management for data area. This is configurable at DIAdem Settings>>DIAdem Settings>>Data Area.

By selecting Always, DIAdem will always save the data virtually, as a file in the specified folder path. Meanwhile, if you select Only if free program memory is smaller than [%], DIAdem starts saving virtual data only after the requirement is fulfilled.

Additional Information

This feature will be helpful when dealing with large data files such as a 30 GB data file. Without this feature, unless the machine itself has more than 30GB of memory, DIAdem will not be able to load those data into the memory for the upcoming data post-processing. With this feature enabled, memory consumption when dealing with large data files will be significantly reduced because data is virtually saved by DIAdem hence disk space is used instead.

All the data saved virtually as files in the mentioned path by DIAdem will be removed when DIAdem is closed. If DIAdem crashed and these files are not removed automatically, you may removed them manually. Below is how these files look like:
