Issue Details

On certain reboots of my system, my PXIe chassis is not detected in NI-MAX.

Solution

NI has identified an existing issue affecting PXIe-839x modules with hardware revision H and later. This issue is intermittent and tends to occur more frequently as additional PXIe chassis are connected to the system via PXIe-839x modules.

To resolve this issue, it is recommended to upgrade the firmware on the following modules:

  • PXIe-8398
  • PXIe-8399
  • PXIe-8394

The required firmware versions are available in the Related Links section.

Note: To upgrade the firmware on the modules, PXI Platform Services version 22.5 or later is required.

If you're unsure whether your system is affected, the following symptoms have been observed in confirmed cases:

Symptoms

  • Users may see boot-up scenarios where the PXIe chassis fail to be identified in NI-MAX.
  • Users may see that the pxiesys.ini file is not populated with PXIe chassis information.
    • This file can be found in the C:\Windows directory.
  • Users may see that the PXI Resource Manager service (nipxism.exe) is consuming a large percentage of the CPU utilization.

If you're unable to upgrade the firmware due to driver version constraints or other limitations, the following workarounds may help:

Workarounds

  1. Shutting down and powering the system back up.
    1. Generally, fully shutting down and powering the system back up will allow the system to be configured correctly.
    2. Rebooting the system from this state may allow the issue to present itself again.
