Is There Any Possibility That an Overrange Condition on a DMM Could Damage the Hardware?

Issue Details

I am using the PXIe-4082. When testing a DUT, the typical measurement is around 1 mV. However, in some cases, the voltage exceeds 10 V when the DUT is broken, resulting in an "Over Range" condition. Could this damage the hardware? My understanding is that the PXIe-4082 is a ±300 V DMM, so it should be safe to input voltages within this range.

Solution

The DMM will not be damaged by a signal that exceeds the measurement range as long as it remains under the 300V protection spec.
