Issue Details

I am considering the whole power that can be used for the modules inside my Chassis PXIe-1095, and based on the manual, it mentions that the total maximum usable power is 900W for single and 1644W for dual supplies, while each of its power supply is 1200W.

Where does this difference in power go? Is it just to give some buffer zone to operate below the max limit, OR is it something else (like 900W does not include the controller slot's 250W, etc.)?

Solution

The chassis itself requires some power. The system starts with 1200W from the power supplies, which the chassis eats into. From there, about 900W is left over for the modules to use. This is the usable power.

Fans consume quite a lot of power when running at a 58W high fan. There 2 PCIe switches also need power. Since the power supply output is one 12V main rail, the chassis has VRs to convert it to 5V, 3.3V and -12V. All the VRs don't work at 100% efficiency, some power at dissipated at heat during conversion. All these factors contribute to only 900W for modules.
