Issue Details

I am using the NI PXIe-1088 chassis and NI PXIe-8842 controller together with other PXI instrument and I realized that the NI PXIe-1088 chassis and NI PXIe-8842 controller and some instruments is somehow undetected in NIMAX on a random occasion..

The hardware is functioning normally and repairing NI PXI Platform Services will not solve this issue. Why is this happening and how to solve this issue?

Solution

This is an expected issue as this issue is documented in the known issue section of PXIe-8822/42/62 Getting Started .

This issue is due to silicon level issue of retimer with the Broadcom Gen 2 switch.

The workaround is to update the controller 2025 Q1 firmware which is available for download at ni.com

User can follow this link to update the controller firmware: How to Update PXI Chassis, Controller Or MXI Board Firmware - NI .

This issue is not seen in chassis with PCI Gen 3 switches like PXIe-1092 and PXIe-1095 .

Additional Information

However, there are some known issue on this firmware update:

  • Avoid using sleep or hibernate modes as the BIOS bypasses some of the hardware initialization check upon waking up.
  • May experience higher link up failure rate on these 2 EOL chassis model (PXIe-1082 and PXIe-1075) that uses Broadcom gen 2 switch.
  • Avoid using PXIe-1088 slot 4 with following modules that contains Gen 2 PCIe switch as following:
    • PXIe-8522/23
    • PXIe-8623
    • PXIe-8521
    • PXIe-8245
    • PXIe-8246
