Issue Details

The status LED on my CompactRIO (cRIO) is flashing continuously and I can not see it in Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX).

Solution

The status LED flashing can mean a variety of things depending on the pattern of the flashes. Please refer to the user manual of your device to understand the meaning of different flashing patterns. See the Flashing Status Light on CompactRIO Controller for a general interpretation.

A continuously flashing status LED (no longer pauses) means the device is in an unrecoverable state. There is a variety of reasons that can cause your cRIO device to enter this "unrecoverable state". Before contacting NI support, you can try to format/reset the device by following the below-mentioned steps to fix the issue:

  1. Please boot the device into Safe Mode by pressing the reset button on your cRIO device for 5 seconds.
  2. If it was booted successfully into Safe Mode then the status LED should be blinking 3 times every few seconds (instead of constantly blinking).
  3. Now that the cRIO is in Safe Mode, try to format the cRIO through NI MAX by right-clicking your target and selecting Format. Refer to Formatting Your Remote Target for more information.
  4. After the format, the target should boot back into Run Mode.
If the above method does not work then you might need to manually restore the cRIO. For that, depending on your RT Target's OS, please follow either Restore NI Linux RT Target to Factory Default Configuration or Restore NI Phar Lap and VxWorks RT Target to Factory Default Configuration.

If the mentioned steps do not work, kindly contact NI Support.
