Issue Details

I have an NI motion control card, but I'm not sure if it uses ValueMotion, FlexMotion or NI-Motion, how do I choose and why?

Solution

The first motion control driver released by NI was ValueMotion. The modules supported by this driver technology have been discontinued. At first, ValueMotion was used to install a program called 'pcRunner' which was used to configure Motion control modules. In ValueMotion version 4.3 and In a later release, Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) included this functionality.

When the ValueMotion product was discontinued, NI released FlexMotion, the driver for our new series of Motion control modules. At that time ValueMotion and FlexMotion could be installed in the same system, and the new series and earlier series of modules could be used in the same system.

When FlexMotion was in version 5.2, it was called NI-Motion. NI-Motion version 6 (including) ValueMotion and NI-Motion could coexist on the same system, but in later versions, it is no longer supported.

The PCI-7334 NI-Motion Controller fills the need for a low-cost motion control card, and so replaces the entire line of ValueMotion products. But now PCI-7334 is obsolete and there's no replacement product in NI at current stage.

The following table describes which NI motion control modules are supported by which drivers and which operating systems are available.
