Issue Details

I am a Software Administrator and we are moving to another server. I have created a backup file  in NI VLM.

When I'm restoring NI VLM from the backup file  on the new server I receive the following error:

"Select a valid NI VLM backup file".

Solution

This error occurs because the license file on the original server had already expired at the time the backup file was created. When you restore this backup on the new server, NI Volume License Manager (VLM) reads the information contained in the backup and detects that the license file was expired. As a result, the error message appears even if you are using a new, valid license file created specifically for the new server.

The solution is as follows:

  • Obtain a new license file for your old server from NI (using your old server details).
  • Install this valid license file in NI VLM on the old server.
  • Create the backup file.
  • Install your valid license file (created for your new server) in NI VLM on your new server.
  • Restore your NI VLM data from the backup file.

Additional Information

If you can confirm that your original license file was still valid at the time the backup was created on the old server, please review the articles listed in the Related Links section or contact NI Technical Support
