When using perpetual licenses alongside subscription licenses, you may need to host the existing perpetual license file and the new subscription license file on separate license servers.

If you would like to use the same configuration settings and client information for the new license server as the one you are currently using, you can do so by applying those settings during the initial setup of the new license server using the method described below.

  1. Create a Backup File

Create a backup of the license server that includes both the server settings and client information. To do this, open NI Volume License Manager (NI VLM) and navigate to:

File → Backup/Restore NI VLM

Then, specify the desired output destination and proceed with the backup, as shown in the figure below.

Once the process is complete, a backup file with the extension .vlmbak will be created in the selected folder.

  1. Standing up a new license server using a backup file

On the newly prepared PC, install NI Volume License Manager and complete the initial configuration by restoring the .vlmbak backup file, as outlined below.

For the parts other than the above settings, configure settings according to the operation.

Backups from another server are not available outside of the Getting Started Wizard. If you need to revert to the first boot state, see How to Use a Backup Created with Another NI VLM .

  1. Compare old and new license server settings and client information

Review the configuration of both the new license server and the old license server started using the method described above. The license items displayed when launching Volume License Manager include a large amount of license‑file–specific and PC‑specific information, so they often do not match.

On the other hand, by opening Tools >> Preferences and reviewing the various settings, you can confirm that the same settings are used on both the old server and the new server.

You can also confirm that the client information and group information for users, computers, and groups are the same on both the old server and the new server.

One of the two license servers set up by the above method hosts the permanent license file and the other hosts the subscription license file, and each client connects to the server corresponding to the license to be used. You can use a license from a license file hosted on .
