Issue Details

The PXIe-6592 has 4 SFP+ ports in the front module. Some SFP+ ports can accept SFP transceivers at the cost of reduced data rates. Can I use an SFP transceiver or cable to connect to the SFP+ ports in the PXIe-6592?

Solution

The PXIe-6592 only supports SFP+ transceivers and cables. An SFP transceiver will not work with this device. The PXIe-6592 has two data rate ranges it can operate in, 500 Mbps to 8 Gbps and 9.8 Gbps to 10.3125 Gbps. These data rates are not meant to be compatible with SFP which is capable of up to 4.25Gbps. Additionally, SFP is based on the SFF-8472 protocol, and SFP+ conforms to SFF-8431 and SFF-8432.

Additional Information

SFP+ is an enhanced version of SFP, capable of faster data rates (16Gbps vs 4.25Gbps respectively). Although they both fit in the same ports, they are not always compatible.
SFP and SFP+ Transceivers have the same shape and are mateable, but they are not interchangeable. Some SFP+ ports can accept SFP at reduced speeds of 1Gbps, but SFP+ cables cannot be used with SFP ports.
