Firmware Version Not in Sync with Software for 2-port PXIe-8510 (Revision J)

Issue Details

My PXI-8510 (2-port, Revision J) is not properly recognized in NI MAX (ports show up as “Unknown”). I also see the following error messages in the Settings tab when selecting the device:

The firmware version of your NI-XNET hardware is not in sync with your software. Use the ‘Update Firmware’ button to resolve the issue.

The PXIe-8510 shows up outside the chassis in MAX like this:

Solution

To fix this issue, you will need to run the attached VI to correct the flash memory content on the module. Please follow these steps:
  1. Confirm the latest version of NI-VISA is installed on your system. If not download and installed it, then restart the PC.
  2. Setup the NI-VISA driver for the PXIe-8510:
    1. Enable installing unsigned drivers in Windows (You might need to look for additional Microsoft documentation for your specific version of Windows)
    2. Download and unzip the attached file to the Desktop on your PC.
    3. From the extracted files, right-click on NI PXIe-8510 2 port.inf and select Install from the menu.
  3. Open the Windows Device Manager. From the list of devices:
a. Find the 2-Port PXIe-8510 under NI-XNET Devices, right-click on it and select Update Driver.

    1.  Select Browse my computer for drivers.
    2. Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
    3. Select the VISA driver NI PXIe-8510 2-port (VISA).

  1. From the extracted files, open Fix Flash Memory on PXIe-8510 2 Port Rev J.vi.

  1. Choose the VISA resource name corresponding to the 2 port PXIe-8510.
  2. Enter the correct serial number for the device (Instructions to find the serial number of your module).
  3. Run the VI. It should be completed in a few seconds.
  4. Open the Windows Device Manager again. From the list of devices:
    1. Find the 2-Port PXIe-8510 under NI-XNET Devices, right-click on it and select Update Driver.
    2.  Select Browse my computer for drivers.
    3. Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
    4. This time, select the XNET driver NI PXIe-8510 2-port.
  5. Restart your PC.
  6. Your device should now be properly recognized in NI MAX and work correctly.

Additional Information

  • This issue only affects a small number of the 2-port version of PXIe-8510 modules, with Hardware Revision J (PN # 158688J-02L).
  • This solution only works on Windows and VIs are saved in LabVIEW 2019. If you need assistance for a previous version or a different OS, please contact NI Support.
