Issue Details

  • Since a license will be reserved and assigned to a single computer and user, why do I always need to make sure my NI License Manager need to maintain a constant connection with NI VLM server?
  • What will happen if I am disconnected from the server?

Solution

Non-concurrent is a type of license where license is reserved and assigned to a each user/computer. The license on client's side will terminate either when VLM License File's expires or when VLM admin removes clients access from NI VLM server or when client manually removes permission for that license. The purpose of maintaining a constant connection with NI VLM server is to ensure that VLM server always provide access for the license. This is to ensure VLM admin and clients have the right to terminate the license whenever needed. Additionally, every license assigned will include a grace period of 2 weeks, if disconnected from the server.

For concurrent license, this right to terminate license is not up to admin and client but is automated by NI VLM server itself. Once a software is done being used, VLM server will retrieve back the license to be used by other clients.

However, if a connection to VLM server is not needed, for non-concurrent license, clients can request a disconnected license from VLM server. Disconnected license allows NI VLM admin to set an expiration date on a selected license. Please refer to related links for more information about disconnected licenses.
