What hardware considerations do I need to be aware of when configuring hardware systems for use in InsightCM?

Solution

InsightCM supports a number of National Instruments embedded controllers. These are grouped into a few different categories, see the table below for more information about the different kinds of controllers available.

Important considerations and examples for each controller type are included below. See NI Monitoring Device Hardware for NI InsightCM for a list of dynamic and static modules referenced throughout this article.
  • CMS-9036 and CMS-9047
    • Slot 1 must always be an NI-9232 module configured for Tachometer measurements. Channels from this module can only connect to assets configured as Tachometers, not accelerometers or other sensors.
    • Slots 2-8 must be filled in ascending order, but not all slots need to be filled. These slots must all be the same kind of dynamic module (NI-9229, NI-9230, NI-9232).
    • The NI-9229 will only work in a CMS-9036 controller and should only be used when interfacing with the buffered outputs on protection systems. IEPE must be disabled in Device Type heading.
    • This controller does not support static modules of any kind.
  • CMS-9065
    • There are three possible combination of dynamic and static modules. Note: The dynamic modules (NI-9230, 9232) must be the same in a single chassis, but static modules may be mixed.
      • Configuration A: Up to 4 dynamic modules of the same type filled in ascending order
      • Configuration B: Up to 2 dynamic modules of the same type in Slots 1-2 filled in ascending order, Up to 2 mixed static modules in Slots 3-4 in either slot
      • Configuration C: Up to 4 mixed static modules in any slots
  • CMS-9068
    • There are four possible combination of dynamic and static modules. Note: The dynamic modules (NI-9230, 9232) must be the same in a single chassis, but static modules may be mixed.
      • Configuration A: Up to 8 dynamic modules of the same type filled in ascending order
      • Configuration B: Up to 6 dynamic modules of the same type in Slots 1-6 filled in ascending order, Up to 2 mixed static modules in Slots 7-8 in either slot
      • Configuration C: Up to 2 dynamic modules of the same type in Slots 1-2 filled in ascending order, Up to 6 mixed static modules in Slots 3-8 in any slots
      • Configuration D: Up to 8 mixed static modules in any slots
  • MMS-9065
    • Slot 1 will always be the NI-9242 to monitor the voltage bus.
    • Remaining slots must be filled with NI-9239 modules in ascending order starting with Slot 2, but not all slots need to be filled.
    • The number of motors that are being monitored will influence the number of NI-9239 modules needed. In general, each motor requires 3 channels on a NI-9239 which has 4 input channels. The MMS-9065 supports up to 4 three-phase AC induction electric motors.
      • 1 Motor: 1x NI-9239
      • 2 Motors: 2x NI-9239
      • 3 Motors: 3x NI-9239
      • 4 Motors: 3x NI-9239
  • MMS-9065
    • Slot 1 will always be the NI-9242 to monitor the voltage bus. 
    • Remaining slots must be filled with NI-9239 modules in ascending order starting with Slot 2, but not all slots need to be filled. 
    • The number of motors that are being monitored will influence the number of NI-9239 modules needed. In general, each motor requires 3 channels on a NI-9239 which has 4 input channels. The MMS-9068 supports up to 9 three-phase AC induction electric motors.

      • 9 Motors: 7x NI-9239
  • EMSA-9065 and EMSA-9068
    • The NI-9770 is the only module supported in this chassis. Slots must be filled in ascending order starting with Slot 1, but not all slots need to be filled.
  • IR-3120
    • The controller will always be the IC-3120. FLIR A35 or A65 cameras may be connected to the PoE ports.
