Issue Details

What steps do I need to take in order to correctly set up USRP-2920, USRP-2921, USRP-2922, USRP-2930, or USRP-2932?

NI USRP-2920/2921/2922/2930/2932 is shipped with NI USRP-29xx Getting Started Guide, which contains detailed procedure about how to set up NI-USRP 292x/293x. Steps listed below summarizes the procedure in the document.

Note: This article does not describe set up procedure for USRP-RIO (USRP-2940R, USRP-2942R, USRP-2943R, USRP-2950R, USRP-2952R, and USRP-2953R).

  1. Install LabVIEW
If you are planning to use USRP with LabVIEW and have not installed it on your PC, install LabVIEW as a first step. You can download the evaluation package from here if you do not have LabVIEW license.

Note: You may be prompted to install several device drivers such as NI-DAQmx, NI-VISA, and NI-488.2 when installing LabVIEW. You are not required to install these device drivers if you are planning to use NI-USRP only.

  1. Install NI-USRP

NI-USRP contains hardware driver and library package required for controlling USRP.  Make sure to install NI-USRP after installing LabVIEW because library package will not be installed if LabVIEW is not present on your PC. NI-USRP can be installed from NI Driver Download or from NI-USRP Software Suite included in the USRP kit purchased prior to 2018.

    1. Configure IP (v4) address of your PC

PC and USRP will be connected through Ethernet. As a factory default, USRP has following IP address setting:

    • IP address:
    • Subnet mask:

Your PC's IP address must be configured in the way that your PC and USRP are in the same network. For example, you can set your PC to have following IP address setting so that they will be on the same subnet:

    • IP address:
    • Subnet mask:

For information on how to change IP address of your PC, please refer to Microsoft Windows support page Change TCP/IP settings.

Note: USRP is compatible with Gigabit Ethernet (data rate of 1000 Mbit/s), but not compatible with the Fast Ethernet (data rate of 100 Mbit/s). Therefore, your PC must be compatible with Gigabit Ethernet in order to communicate with USRP. If you are using switching hub between PC and USRP, your switching hub must also be compatible with Gigabit Ethernet.

    1. Check connection between PC and USRP

NI-USRP Configuration Utility is used for checking the connection between your PC and USRP. It can also be used for changing IP address of USRP described in the later section. To open the NI-USRP Configuration Utility, select Start >> All Programs >> National Instruments >> NI-USRP >> NI-USRP Configuration Utility.

If your PC's IP address is set correctly and USRP is properly connected with Gigabit Ethernet, you will find your USRP with IP address as shown in the picture below. If you cannot find your USRP, make sure your PC's IP address and Ethernet Cable connection is properly set up.

    1. (Optional) Change IP address of USRP

When you have problem in setting 192.168.x.x as your PC's IP address, or when you are connecting multiple USRP to single PC using a switching hub, you may need to change the default IP address of USRP. Follow the steps below to change IP address of USRP.

    1. Select your USRP in NI-USRP Configuration Utility.
    2. Enter New IP Address. The example in the picture below sets new IP address as
    1. Click Change IP address. When you are prompted with a dialog, select OK.
    1. After closing the dialog box in step 5-c, a new dialog will pop up asking you to reboot your USRP. Click OK, turn off your USRP, and turn it back on.
    1. Change the IP address of PC as needed, and select Refresh Device List to search for your configured USRP. If your USRP is discovered, it will be listed in NI-USRP Configuration Utility with new IP address.

Note: USRP cannot be configured as DHCP client, so its IP address can only be set statically. If you are introducing USRP to the internal network of your company, be sure to confirm with your network administrator that you are allowed to assign static IP address to your USRP.

    Additional Information

If you have NI-USRP Software Suite, you will also be able to install and activate following software components included within it. These are optional software that introduces additional functionality to LabVIEW, thus not required for the operation of USRP.
