Error (Hex 0xBFFF00A7) While Opening NI VISA Test Panel in NI-MAX

Issue Details

I am trying to use the RS-232 communication on a hardware (sbRIO-9637) connected to the PC through an Ethernet. when I try to open the NI-VISA test panel in NI-MAX I get an error message as shown below: 

VISA:  (Hex 0xBFFF00A7) The remote machine does not exist or is not accepting any connections.
If the NI-VISA server is installed and running on the remote machine,
it might have an incompatible version or might be listening on a different port.

Solution

Since the hardware is connected through Ethernet which uses the Ethernet protocol (Not RS-232) it will not appear as one of your serial devices on your PC. You can use the NI-VISA server on your hardware (sbRIO) to be able to communicate it using VISA. To do this:

1) Right-click the Software tab under your hardware in NI-MAX then choose Add/Remove Software 
 
 
2) Choose the compactRIO driver you are using. 
 

 
3) Mark NI-VISA Server as one of the pieces of software to be added.
 

 

Additional Information

If you are using sbRIO-9637 the ASRL1 RS-232 serial port cannot be accessed by the user application when the Console Out startup option is enabled. Therefore if you want to use RS-232 make sure the Console Out startup option is disabled.
