Text Search/Find Function Is Too Slow in a VI

Issue Details

  • In the LabVIEW Development Environment, when I do a text search in my VI (using CTRL + F), it takes too long for this function to finish executing and to show results.
  • Why does it take so long to do a text search in my VI?
  • I'm searching text in my VI using the Find Dialog Box, but the search takes too much time

Solution

One of the potential reasons for this uncommon behavior is that there is a large element being pre-loaded in this VI.  Check for clusters and/or arrays that have a lot of elements (in the order of thousands). If such an array/cluster is found, try to delete it and perform the text search on this VI again. If after deleting the array/cluster the Find functionality works properly, then this array/cluster was too big for the find function to operate rapidly.

Additional Information

If the slowness of the Find function poses a problem to your application needs, then it might be better to explore additional ways of handling these large data sets. Please check the Related Links section below for recommendations on how to handle large data sets.  If using the Find function is not critical to your application needs, and your application is not being affected during run-time, then you may leave your VI as it is.
