MIL-STD-1553 is a dual redundant bus architecture. Each channel contains both Bus A and Bus B. These buses are not considered separate channels. Instead, if communication on Bus A fails, communication can be retransmitted on Bus B within the same channel.
Each channel includes both Bus A and Bus B, but communication can occur on only one bus at a time.
The Bus Function specification indicates whether the module can operate as a single MIL-STD-1553 device function or multiple device functions simultaneously. The three MIL-STD-1553 device functions are:
- Bus Controller (BC)
- Bus Monitor (BM)
- Remote Terminal (RT)
A single-function module can operate as only one of these functions on a channel at a given time.
A multi-function module can operate as any combination of these functions simultaneously. For example, a multi-function module can emulate a BC, a BM, and up to 32 RTs on a single channel.
