Issue Details

When I try to open a .nihelp file to view National Instruments web manuals while offline, I get the error message below.

An internal error occurred.
Unknown command: <File path to .nihelp file>

Solution

This can happen if you try to open a .nihelp offline help file without the NI Help Viewer application installed.
  1. Install the NI Help Viewer application 1.0 from NI Package Manager if you haven't already. See Installing an NI Product Package on an Offline Machine if you need to install NI Help Viewer on a machine without internet access.
  1. Once NI Help Viewer is installed, you may need to manually point the .nihelp extension to the NI Help Viewer application.
    • Right-click on an .nihelp file in Windows Explorer and select Open With...
      • In Windows 10: Select More Apps, then select Look for another app on this PC.
      • In Windows 7: Select Browse...
    • Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments\Help Viewer
    • Select NIHelpViewer.exe.
  2. This will point the .nihelp extension to the NI Help Viewer application.
