Maximum Current Limiting in Power Supplies

Issue Details

What is the maximum amount of current my PXI device can limit? This is different from the maximum output current.

Example: we have 20V output with a 20 ohms load. The current flowing in the circuit is 1A.

Can we limit the output current to be 500mA? Can we limit to be less than that?

Solution

The lowest output current limit we can set is 200uA. The maximum current limiting will depend on the device and the range selected. You can verify this in the following link: Ranges

For the PXI-4110 channel 1 and 2 the ranges to limit the current would be [+0.20 to +20mA] in 20mA range and [+0.01 to +1A] in 1A range.

Additional Information

When using NI-DCPower it's needed to choose between constant current or constant voltage. We can use the Current Limit property or Configure Current Limit VI to force a current limit. Refer to the Ranges topic for your device in the NI DC Power Supplies and SMUs Help.
