Issue Details

Why do I receive Error 1501 when I try to view my STL or VRML file using a 3D Picture Control in LabVIEW?

Solution

Error 1501: Not a VRML 97 File, or contains unsupported models occurs when using a Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) or Stereolithography (STL) file that is not supported by LabVIEW.

Most CAD software allows you to use the Save As... option to choose different file types. LabVIEW only supports VRML 97 and ASCII STL files. If your file is any type other than VRML 97 or ASCII STL, you will receive error 1501.

Additional Information

Most Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, like SOLIDWORKS®, allows you to save 3D geometries in Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) or Stereolithography (STL) file formats. VRML files are stored with a .wrl extension and STL files are stored with a .stl extension. You can view these formats in LabVIEW by mapping a VRML or STL geometry to a 3D Object and viewing it in a 3D Picture Control.

By default, some CAD programs will save 3D geometries to types that are not supported in LabVIEW. These types include binary STL, VRML 1.0 and VRML 2.0.
