Issue Details

I would like to measure the current output of my NI 9265 module with a Digital Multimeter, what load resistance must I have?

Solution

It is the compliance voltage and the output current that define the maximum load for the module. NI 9265 has a compliance voltage of 12 VDC. The compliance voltage is the maximum voltage that a current source can supply to a load.

Examples (Using Ohms Law U=R*I):
  • If you desire an output current range of 4 mA to 20 mA, the output voltage will range from 2 to 10 VDC with a 500 Ω resistor, and thus be compliant.
  • If the desired output current is only 10 mA then the module could drive loads up to 12 V / 10 mA = 1.2 kΩ instead.
Note that the Burden Voltage is neglected in above examples (the internal resistance of the ammeter/multimeter is assumed to be zero).
