Overvoltage Protection on NI DC Power Supplies

Issue Details

I am worried that my NI DC Power Supply will supply too much voltage to my load and damage it. Do the NI DC Power Supplies include overvoltage protection?


Some, but not all, of our DC power supplies have an output overvoltage protection (OVP) feature which will disable the output of the affected channel and disconnect the channel circuitry from the output connector pins if the voltage outputted by device exceeds the set OVP voltage limit.

In addition, all of our devices have user-programmable voltage and current limits that can be used to limit the output of the devices. This is different than OVP protection, as the device's outputs will not be disconnected from the channel circuitry in this case. If there was a change in the load that prompted the power supply to source more current, thus raising the voltage greater than the user set voltage limit, the device would stop sourcing current once that limit was reached and automatically switch to sourcing voltage, to prevent the voltage from exceeding the limit.
