Operating System

  • PharLap
  • NI Linux Real-Time

Issue Details

  • I would like to convert a desktop PC into a Real-Time target running NI Linux Real-Time. My intention is to use current Linux drivers and create applications in C in order to deploy applications to that target.
  • I need to deploy packages to a NI Linux Real-Time system. Is there a way to create an NI Linux Real-Time development environment with the same distribution has my Real-Time controller?

Solution

NI is not currently planning on supporting the conversion of desktop PCs to NI Linux Real-Time targets. To replicate an NI Linux Real-Time system, the Replication and Deployment (RAD) Utility should be used. This utility creates an image of a real-time controller (including all contents of the hard drive and bitfiles) that can be deployed onto other controllers of the same model.

For user instructions, refer to Archived: Archive of the Real-Time Application Deployment (RTAD) Utility.

Additional Information

Additionally, Vision Acquisition Software (VAS) started support on PXI controllers running Linux Real-Time as of VAS 20.6. To use this, make sure to install Linux RT Image 20.6 on the PXI controller to match the version of VAS.

Conversion of desktop PCs to Phar Lap ETS targets is still available. There are 2 different versions:
  • NI LabVIEW Real-Time Deployment License for Desktop PCs.
  • LabWindows/CVI RT ETS Deployment License Bundle for Standard PC's.
Both of those Deployment licenses are based on Phar Lap. For more information please see Requirements for Desktop PCs as LabVIEW Real-Time Targets.
