Ethernet PXI Module Channels Lose Communication Intermittently

Issue Details

I have an 18-slot PXI card that has an Ethernet controller card. If I put this in any slot other than slots 2-7, I sometimes drop communication with one of the Ethernet ports. What causes this to occur, and is there anything I can do about it?

Solution

On the backplane, the chassis must route data from the cards to the PXI controller and back to the cards. According to Figure 1-3 of the datasheet for the PXI-1045, slots 7-18 must pass data through a PXI switch in order to reach the controller. This means these cards all share a limitation in bandwidth that the first 6 cards do not have. Slot 7 is connected to slot 6 by a local bus, meaning this slot can also communicate at higher speeds.

When using a PXI card with multiple ethernet ports, a lot of data transfer may be required to communicate using all ports. If this causes throughput or connection issues, consider upgrading to a PXIe card or using slots 2-7 for your high-throughput cards.
