Issue Details

When I insert my PXI card it appears in MAX as a PCI card (or vice-versa). I have installed all the required drivers for my PXI system and the other PXI cards that were already in the chassis are recognized correctly. What are the possible causes and solution to this?

Solution

When a new card is inserted into a PXI system, the Window OS will detect it and assign a driver to the new device. In this case, Window has assigned a PCI driver to the PXI card (or vice-versa) and hence the card is showing as a PCI card.

To resolve this issue, begin by reseating the card in the same slot and restarting your computer. This may cause the device to be recognized properly and the correct drivers to be installed.

If this does not work, updat the driver assigned to the PXI card in Windows Device Manager:
  1. Open Device Manager:
    • Windows 8 and 10:
      Windows Key + X  » Device Manager
    • Windows 7:
My Computer » Properties » Device Manager (left pane of window)
    • Windows XP:
My Computer » Properties » Hardware » Device Manager
    • Windows 2000:
Start » Settings » Control Panel » System » Hardware » Device Manager
    • Windows 9x / Millennium (Me):
Start » Settings » Control Panel » System » Device Manager
    • Windows NT 4.0:
Start » Programs » Administrative Tools (Common) » Windows NT Diagnostics » Resources
  2. In the Device Manager window, expand the Data Acquisition Device tree item. You will see a yellow warning exclamation mark besides the PCI Device.

  3. Right-click on PCI Device » update driver. A new window Hardware Update Wizard will open.

  4. Select Yes, now and every time I connect a device and click on Next.

  5. Select Install the software automatically (Recommended) and click on Next.

  6. Wait for windows to search for the correct PXI driver and click on Finish
Now you can see in both Device Manager and MAX, the newly-inserted PXI card is showing as the correct name.
