Issue Details

  • I try to update my NI software through NI Update Service. Somehow I see lock icons next to my software(s). When I click one of these locked entries, I can see this error message: This update requires a Standard Service Program subscription. Service was not found for this product. How do I install these updates?
  • When I open the NI Update Service, all programs have a lock next to them. I have a Standard Service Program (SSP) subscription, so I know that I am eligible for the upgrade(s). NI Update Service, however, tells me that "This update requires a Standard Service Program subscription. Service was not found for this product". Why am I unable to upgrade?

Solution

This warning is set in place to prevent NI Update Service to automatically download and install software that you might not be able to activate. To activate a software upgraded to a new version, e.g. from LabVIEW 2018 to 2019, an appropriate license is needed. Typically, this is a Standard Service Program (SSP) subscription. Patches, updates, and driver updated do normally not require re-activation or any license. In case you install a software upgrade and do not have a suited license, you can only use the software in evaluation mode.

In case you are not sure if you (still) have an active SSP subscription, you can log into your NI.com account and go to My Products and check your licenses, or contact NI Support and ask about the current status of your license.

You can get rid of the warning message by performing one of the following methods:
If you are using a single-seat license:
  1. Open NI License Manager.
  2. Right-click the product and select Deactivate.
  3. Select the software again and click Activate at the top of the window.
  4. Once you see the serial number listed in NI License Manager, you can proceed with the software upgrade.

If you are using an NI Volume License or Enterprise Agreement:
  1. Open NI Update Service.
  2. Navigate to File » Preferences.
  3. Check Unlock updates for which service is expired.
  4. Confirm the warning dialog afterwards, and click OK.
  5. The lock icon(s) should have vanished now, NI Update Service now allows the installation of all software:
  6. After downloading and installing the software, it will automatically activate through your Volume License Server.

Additional Information

The lock and warning text were set in place to prevent users from accidentally downloading and installing software they may not be able to activate.

This error often occurs when using a Volume License Server to activate products. NI Update Service checks for local license files to verify if your SSP subscription is active. Because activation through your Volume License Server does not generate a local license on your client machine, NI Update Service cannot find a local license and assumes the SSP subscription has lapsed. However, in case your volume license agreement automatically updates, and your Volume License Server has installed a recent license file, you will still be able to activate the seemingly locked software.
