Issue Details

  • I am trying to set up my PXI system that is using the PXIe-8384 and the PXIe-8381 to daisy chain 2 chassis using a fiber-optic cable.  However, I am unable to see my second chassis in NI MAX.
  • I want to use a fiber-optic cable with my PCIe-8381. What do I need to do to set it up?

Solution

As mentioned in the Getting Started guide, the x8 MXI-Express fiber cable requires a Constant Frequency Clock (CFC) be provided to the cable. Gen II x8 PCI Express and PXI Express remote controllers use Spread Spectrum Clocking (SSC) by default.

You must change the setting using the toggle switch on your MXI-Express Gen II x8 remote
controller:

For the PCIe-8381:

Change the third switch for SW1 to ON refer to figure 1

Figure 1. NI PCIe-8381 set to CFC mode by toggling position 3 of SW1 to the ON position

For the PXIe-8384 or PXIe-8383mc:

Change the SW5 into the CFC position
