Issue Details

I have connected my USB device to my computer but it doesn't show up as an option for the VISA Resource Name control. How do I get my device to show up?

Solution

There are a couple of steps you can take to troubleshoot this issue:

  1. Check if the device shows up under the Windows Device Manager. If it doesn't show up, there are a few possibilities:
  • You are lacking the necessary drivers for your device.
  • The device/driver are incompatible with the current Operating System. Try a different device or a version of the driver that is compatible.
  • The device is faulty.
  1. If the device shows up under Windows Device Manager but is seen as a generic USB device, you will need to install or update the device's driver. You can try updating the driver from the Device Manager by Right Clicking the Device >> Update Driver.
  2.  If the device shows up properly in the Device Manager (a 'name' is associated with the device, as opposed to a generic USB alias), then you should check to see if the device shows up in NI MAX. If the device does not show up under the 'Devices and Interfaces' tab, reinstall NI-VISA
  3. If the device shows up in NI MAX but not in the VISA Resource control in LabVIEW, Left Click the VISA Resource Name >> Refresh.
  4. If the device still doesn't show up as a VISA Resource after these steps, contact NI Support
