Issue Details

I am attempting to connect to an NI Real-Time target through a virtual machine. However, I am receiving a message from NI MAX reporting that the target isĀ Connected - Inconsistent IP Settings. Why is this occurring?

Solution

Please note that connecting to a Real-Time target through a virtual machine is not an officially supported configuration.

A device may report inconsistent IP settings for a variety of reasons. In addition to the standard reasons for encountering the inconsistent IP settings warning, when using a virtual machine this error message may be reported when there are network issues with the virtual machine, rather than the Real-Time target.

Verify that both the host machine and the virtual machine can ping the target's IP address. If the host can but the virtual machine cannot, this indicates a problem with the network connection between the two machines.
There are usually different option for handeling connection from your Virtual Machine to the network. Depending on your network configuration and Virtual Machine, you shlould try to find the configuration that works for you : Bridge, NAT, Host-Only, LAN Segment.
In some cases, the virtual machine may be set to a static IP address, but may automatically choose a new IP address, resulting in the inconsistent IP warning from NI MAX.

Additional Information

You should contact the software manufacturer for assistance in configuring the network settings of the virtual machine.
