Issue Details

I would like to use the PXI-5421 Analog Video Generator (AVG) to generate RS-170 video. Is RS-170 supported by AVG, and if so how do I enable it?

Solution

Although not natively selectable in AVG, RS-170 format signals can be generated based on their similarity to NTSC.

To configure the AVG for RS-170 generation, follow these steps:
  1. Choose M-NTSC from the Video format list.
  2. On the Appearance tab, configure the following settings:
    • In the Level Settings, set Saturation factor to 0.
    • In the Timing Settings, set Sample frequency (Hz) to 20.034 M.
  3. On the Sync, Burst and Noise tab, in the Color Burst Parameters, set Burst amplitude (Pk-Pk) to 0.
  4. On the Filters and Levels tab, configure the following settings:
    • In the Filters settings, set I filter to Off.
    • In the Filters settings, set Q filter to Off.
After completing this configuration, AVG should generate video per the RS-170 video standard.

Additional Information

RS-170 is the composite monochrome video format that preceded the color version of NTSC, which later became RS-170a.

Note that this is not to be confused with RS-170 RGB, which is an analog color component video standard. AVG cannot generate component video.
