Issue Details

I have a client computer that was connected to a Volume License Server using NI License Manager. When I try to disconnect the server it throws me the following error:

"This volume license server could not be removed due to an error writing to the registry or because this volume license server is specified in an environment variable"

Solution

Delete or modify the environment variable that defines the server name and port:
  1. Go to Start»Settings»Control Panel»System»Advanced
  2. Click on the Environment Variables button. The format of the environment variables is: PORT_NUMBER@SERVER_NAME where the PORT_NUMBER is optional.
  3. Modify NILM_LICENSE_FILE Windows environment variable

Additional Information

Environment variables describe the environment in which programs run. The concept of environment variables exists in most operating systems, from Linux to OS X to Windows, although the way they are implemented and used differs.

When License Manager or any NI application software is launched, it checks all the locations that identify volume license servers, in the order listed below:
  • NILM_LICENSE_FILE Windows environment variable
  • LM_LICENSE_FILE Windows environment variable
  • Servers configured in NI License Manager in the Options»Preferences»Use Network License Servers field
