Issue Details

While installing the Lookout 6.0 Core component, I receive the following error:

Error 1609. An error occurred while applying security settings. Users is not a valid user or group.

How can I resolve this error, and why does it occur?

This error can occur if the Lookout installer is unable to find the Users group on certain systems. To complete installation, a Users group must be created.

There are 2 ways to accomplish this:

  1. From the Windows Control Panel, navigate to Administrative Tools then Computer Management. Expand System Tools >> Local Users and then Groups >> Groups. Right-click on Groups and select New Group. Name the new group Users.
  2. Run the following command from the Windows command line: net localgroup Users /add

After adding the Users group, you should be able to complete the installation successfully.

Additional Information

This error typically occurs as a result of Lookout not being able to locate the Users group on non-English locale Operating Systems. Adding the Users group allows the installer to complete, but an additional step outlined below may be necessary depending on the situation.

If non-Administrator users will be using Lookout, you will need to add permissions for those users. On the security permissions for the <Lookout 6.0>\database folder, add permissions of Change or Full Control to the users or user groups that will be using Lookout. The installer will already have given those permissions to the Users group (the one just created), but the true Users group on the computer will be different. If you are not using the default database then you should do the same for the database folder you are using.
