Unhandled Error in Volume License Manager 3.0 When Accessing Preferences?

Issue Details

When I am in Volume License Manager, and I try to open the Preferences Dialog by selecting Tools»Preferences, I receive an unhandled exception error as shown below.  I am also unable to start my volume license server.

Why is this exception occurring and what can I do to fix the issue?


This exception can occur when the NILM License Manager service is missing or improperly configured in FLEXlm.  The configuration of this service can be checked by using lmtools.exe.


If the NILM License Manager service does not appear in LMTOOLS, then the NI Volume License Manager installation will need to be repaired in order to create it.  If any of the paths in the configuration are missing, they will also need to be set in order to properly reference the appropriate lmgrd.exe and the license file.  The default locations for these paths are given below. 


Path to the lmgrd.exe file:
 C:\Program Files\National Instruments\Shared\License Manager\Bin\lmgrd.exe 

Path to the license file: 

Windows 7
C:\ProgramData\National Instruments\Volume License Manager\nivlm.lic

Windows XP
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\National Instruments\Volume License Manager\nivlm.lic
