  • Why Does My GPIB-USB-HS Cable Show up as a USB RAW Device in Measurement & Automation Explorer?
  • NI MAX does not recognize my GPIB-USB-HS correctly
  • No GPIB options or menus showing up when I click in my GPIB-USB-HS device in Measurement & Automation Explorer
  • I cannot see or communicate with my GPIB instrument when I plug it into the GPIB cable/adapter.


The USB-GPIB-HS cable is most likely being associated with an incorrect driver by Windows. The correct National Instruments driver will need to be associated with the device for it to work properly.

Before attempting the next steps, make sure your computer has installed the latest NI-488.2 driver that's compatible with your operating system. You will need to restart your computer after installing this software so the changes can be applied to the Windows operating system. You can check for your installed NI software in NI Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX)»My System»Software.

Complete the following steps to verify which driver Windows is using for the device: 


  1. Navigate to Windows Device Manager (Usually located in: Start Menu»Control Panel»Hardware and Sound»Device Manager).
  2. Right-click on the device and select Properties.
  3. Click on the Driver tab.




If the device driver associated with the device is not the NI-488.2 driver, complete the following steps to select the correct driver:

  1. Right-click on the device in Device Manager.
  2. Select Update Driver...
  3. Select Browse my computer for driver software
  4. Navigate to and select the NI-488.2 driver on your computer.  The default location for this will be C:\Program Files(x86)\National Instruments\NI-488.2
If the driver driver associated with the device is NI-488.2, ensure that the following services are running via the following steps:
  1. Search for Services in Windows and open the software.
  2. Ensure that NI GPIB Enumeration Service, NI LXI Discovery Service, and NI Route Coordinator are running.
    1. If these services are not running, right click on the service and select Start.
  3. Restart NI-MAX.
