Upgrading NI Volume License Manager (VLM)

Updated Dec 26, 2025

Environment

Software

  • Volume License Manager

  • I need to upgrade the version of NI VLM 3.X on our server due to compatibility issues with NI License Manager 4.4. How do I do this?
  • How do I upgrade NI VLM 3.X or later version to a newer or latest version?

If you are upgrading from NI Volume License Manager 3.x or earlier version to the latest version or you are moving to a new server, refer to the steps in Migrating NI Volume License Manager (VLM) to a New Server

Otherwise please follow the below steps:

  1. Start by creating a backup of your server's settings before performing the update. See Creating an NI VLM Backup for instructions, this step is not mandatory, but it is recommended in case something goes wrong during the new installation.
  2. Download and install the latest version of NI VLM. Ensure that the VLM version is compatible with your Operating System by clicking on the Supported OS tab on the Download Page. Please note that you do not need to stop the server or uninstall the older version of NI VLM first. The new version will install on top of your current VLM version.
  3. Start NI VLM and confirm that the server is running.

Upgrading NI VLM should have automatically integrate your configuration and license file with the new version. If this does not occur, follow the steps on the Getting Started screen after launching VLM. A new license file is not required for this. If prompted with the Import Settings screen select Import settings from a previous NI VLM 3.x installation, and upload the Backup file created in step 1.

Additional Information

Any users/computers that have previously checked out a non-concurrent network license will still have access to the software during the upgrade through the automatic 14-day backup license that will be issued when the server is inaccessible. Any users/computers using concurrent licenses will temporarily lose access to licenses.

If you are upgrading from VLM 2.X you will need to follow a slightly different process outlined in Upgrading NI Volume License Manager (VLM) Version 2.x to 3.x.
